Angus Dominate Latest Breed Figures
Angus comprised almost half the British breed cattle registered in Australia in 2002 in a dramatic demonstration of the surge to Angus in the nations temperate beef cattle herd, according to figures released by the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA).
In the year, 54,662 Angus calves were registered in the primary and secondary registers, close to triple 10 years ago and six times the 9,227 Angus recorded in 1989. The combined Hereford and Poll Hereford registrations dropped from 62,037 in 1989 to 38,858 in 2002.
Ten years ago, four Herefords/Poll Herefords were recorded to every one Angus. In 2001 the ratio was one to one. In 2002, Angus registrations exceeded the combined Hereford/Poll Hereford registrations by 41%.
Nationwide, Angus comprised 28% of the beef cattle registered in 2002 followed by Herefords/Poll Herefords with 19.5% and Brahmans with 11%.
